The Bibliography section of the website has been updated. The number of magazine and newspaper references has doubled, so the list has been split into two halfs: 1957 - 1995 and 1996 - Present. Let me know if compiling this list is helpful to you. I need to know if it is worth the effort.
Also changed the front page photograph..."a fragment of the day."

In the intervening months, I came to the conclusion that in order for the site to survive, I must upgrade it to a Yahoo/Geocities Premium website. If enough visitors agree that the site is worth saving, with contributions for as little as $1.00, I will be willing to continue the efforts involved in maintaining it. In other words, it's up to you. Click on the Amazon Honor System box on the front page to contribute.

After more than seven months, I'm returning with a vengeance. (Watch out, Sweeney!) The Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration has rekindled my desire to update the site. All six main-stage productions have been added to the site (you will find links to all productions here), along with the new Broadway revival of Into the Woods. Other productions added include the 1964 City Center revival of West Side Story, the 2001 Pasadena Playhouse production of Do I Hear a Waltz?, the 2001 Chicago Shakespeare Theater production of Pacific Overtures, the 2002 Royal Festival Hall, London production of Follies and Mandy Patinkin's Celebrating Sondheim.
Newly added recordings include Elaine Stritch's At Liberty, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles' Simply Sondheim, Geraldine Turner's second volume of The Stephen Sondheim Songbook, Fynsworth Alley's release of the Pasadena Playhouse cast recording of Do I Hear a Waltz?, Jay Records' compilation of new and reissued songs: The Musicality of Sondheim, as well as the new cast recording of Into the Woods.
I have also updated most of the bios on the Sondheim People page.

Most pages have been updated to various degrees. Major additions include the 2002 Los Angeles Production of Into the Woods and the 2001 Studio Cast Recording of The Frogs / Evening Primrose. Previously added without an announcement was the 2000 New National Theatre of Tokyo Production of Pacific Overtures.

If you've reached this page, you already know about the new address for the Guide. Please bookmark the new address: www.geocities.com/sondheimguide. By the way, if the Geocities ad square is blocking any text, just click the up arrow on the right side of the square twice and it will disappear.

Updated the Sondheim People page to include credits up to 2001, adding an additional 50% of new material (it is now the largest page, bytewise, on the Guide). If you can help with other credits (including stage, film, television, and recordings), please contact me.
I am in the process of moving this website to another address. The current pages will remain at this address, but only the pages of the new address will be updated. The new address will be www.geocities.com/sondheimguide. When the process is complete, I will announce it on the front page and on this page.

Added a biography of Len Cariou to the Sondheim People page. It was compiled and written by Alan Scott. Also added information on the 1989 London benefit concert, Being Alive. For those who are interested in Candide, here is a sneak preview of my new website A Guide to Leonard Bernstein's Candide. This might help explain why it has been a while since I've updated the SSRG. Let me know what you think.
No one's complained or reported any problems about the site search engine. Since it appears to be working well, I've decided to keep it. If you want some laughs ask me to send you a list of what some people have been searching for on this site.

April 21, 2001
I'm testing a site search engine, which has been added to the front page of the Guide. This will help you search for all appearances of any word or combination of words on all 60 pages of the Guide. During this test period please let me know of any problems that may occur.

If you're a regular visitor to the SSRG, you've probably already noticed the design change. When you get a chance, let me know what you think. Also cleaned up the Links page.
|
March 19, 2001
Updated the Television and Radio page with info provided by Jane Klain. Added info on the 25th Anniversary concert of Side By Side By Sondheim provided by Emma Shane from her Louise Gold website.
|
March 7, 2001
Uploaded info on the Broadway revival of Follies and the Donmar Warehouse production of Merrily We Roll Along. Added the Bridewell production of David Kernan's revue Moving On and its recording. Also made a few design changes (probably unnoticeble to most visitors).
|
October 29, 2000
I was getting tired of the Front Page photograph of Sondheim, so I changed it. Uploaded additions to the Songbooks and Film Work pages. Also updated the Publications sections of most shows to include recent reprintings of complete scores and vocal selections.
|
October 26, 2000
After more than five months of waiting, it has finally arrived. Information on the New York Philharmonic's live concert recording of Sweeney Todd has been uploaded.
|
October 23, 2000
Quite a number of changes this time. The Concerts page has been split into two parts to save on load time. Also split the Gypsy page into a Productions page and a Recordings page. All cast recordings of West Side Story are now gathered on the separate Cast Recordings page. Updated the Sondheim Chronology. Uploaded the redesigned Songbooks page. There is now a notation at the bottom of each page to indicate when it was last modified. And made minor corrections and addenda to almost every page in the Guide.
|
October 9, 2000
The FAQ has been linked from the Front Page and the Table of Contents. Uploaded information on the Library of Congress Birthday Concert courtesy of Gregg Grisa. Added the new collection from Fynsworth Alley, the rather blandly titled The Stephen Sondheim Album.
|
August 17, 2000
Uploaded a trial FAQ, this being the only link to it. After a few more adjustments, I'll add a link to it from the front page and the Table of Contents page. Also added the cast recording of the New York production of Saturday Night.

If you have visited the Guide before, you have probably already noticed
the big change. Despite the fact that I normally hate the use of
frames on websites, I believe they can be useful if properly designed.
I hope my design works well for most browsers. It has been
tested on Netscape's Navigator 3.04 through 4.7, and on Microsoft's latest
version of Internet Explorer (5.0). Please let me know if you have problems. If you find that information is being lost on the outside edges of the window, the best solution is to reduce the font size.
The principal purpose for the re-design is to provide easier navigation
throughout the Guide. By using the navigation bar on the left of
the screen, you can access pages without having to go to the Table of Contents. Of course, this doesn't replace the Table of Contents, which includes links to every page in the Guide.
Besides the new look, I have clarified the problem with song titles
on the Passion page.

May 10, 2000
After more than a few months of respite, I'm ready to plunge back into
the Guide. I've updated the page for the Broadway Production of Putting
It Together and added the New York Production of Saturday
Night, both courtesy of Howard Horowitz. I've also created
a separate page for Sondheim Television and Radio
Appearances with much information provided by Jane Klain of the Museum
of Television and Radio. The Bibliography
and West Side Story Recordings Page have also
been updated with information from Randy Detwiler.

January 2, 2000
Created a page for Wise Guys
with information on the recent workshop. Added the Broadway production
of Putting It Together. Also uploaded info on the revised production of Do
I Hear a Waltz? (provided by its musical director, Sean Patrick
Flahaven.) Added Ethel Merman's Mermania!
Volume 1, which includes her demos for Gypsy (thanks
to Ken Bloom of Harbinger Records.)
